Metodi Metodiev

Metodi Metodiev holds a Master’s degree in International Finance from the University of St Andrews, Scotland. He specializes in public financial management, the deepening of the Economic and Monetary Union, and the European economic and fiscal governance framework. He has also completed additional professional training and courses in the United States, Austria, and Belgium.

His professional career began in the non-governmental sector and continued at the Ministry of Finance of Bulgaria. Between 2010 and 2014, he progressed through various expert positions within the EU Macroeconomic and Fiscal Governance Department, eventually becoming Head of the Department.

From 2015 to 2018, he was seconded to the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Bulgaria to the EU in Brussels, where he served as Head of the Ministry of Finance team. In this role, he was a member of the Financial Counsellors’ Working Group of the Council of the EU.

He contributed to the preparation of ECOFIN Council meetings and worked on dossiers related to the mandates of the EIB and EBRD, macro-financial assistance for third countries, the deepening of EMU, and InvestEU.

During Bulgaria’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, he chaired both the Financial Counsellors’ Working Group and the Multiannual Financial Framework Working Group, initiating the negotiations for the 2021–2027 MFF.

From 2018 to 2022, with a short interruption, he served as Director of the Economic and Financial Policy Directorate. Subsequently, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Finance and later became Director of the European Affairs and Policies Directorate. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank (EIB).
